[Announcing New Excellence Scholarship] IIT Gandhinagar is excited to announce a new merit scholarship this year. All UG students joining in 2019 who have secured a JEE advanced rank within the top 1000 or have represented India in one of the recognized international olympiads are awarded an excellence scholarship of Rs. 2 Lakhs per year (for four years) subject to the student continuing to maintain a reasonable academic record and ethical conduct. Mr Deepak Sultania is the Director of Durga Bearings group, the largest distributor of Bearings in India. Starting at an early age in business, he has a rich and varied experience of 37 years in the bearing trade. With his great business acumen and modern management practice he has turned his company from a small trading company to become a market leader, distributing products of multinational bearing brands all over India. Mr Deepak has also been awarded the Samaj Ratna award for his philanthropic work in Mumbai, Rajasthan. He is father of an alumnus of IIT Gandhinagar and has set up these scholarships to honour his father Shri Mahabir Prasad Sultania (the founder of Durga Enterprises) and his mother Smt. Durga Devi Sultania. Niteen P. Sant Scholarship Amalthea Scholarships Lalita J Shah & Jayantilal B Shah Scholarship Mr Raj Shah did his BTech from IIT Bombay and holds a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Mr Shah brings unique combination of creative leadership, entrepreneurial success, management discipline, and global experience. At Microsoft, he re-energized their online mapping services, and these mapping assets were acquired by Uber in June 2015. At Google, he spearheaded the creation of Maps by establishing a global infrastructure that encompasses all countries mapped by google from the ground up. An entrepreneur by nature, Mr Shah has also held senior management positions in leading Silicon Valley technology firms. This scholarship has been instituted in the name of his parents Mrs Lalita J Shah and Mr Jayantilal B Shah. P.K. Kelkar Scholarship Sri Temasek@IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship Satyaram Scholarships Prof. M H Divekar Scholarship Late Prof Divekar, an adjunct Professor at IITGN during Dec 2009 to July 2013 was passionate about chemical engineering experiments. Throughout his professional career he spent many years in designing labs and lab experiments. He made an enormous contribution to the IITGN in its early years by setting up excellent teaching laboratories in Chemical Engineering. S.C. Mehrotra’s Scholarship Shri S.C. Mehrotra, an IIT Delhi alumnus has professional experience of more than four decades in the field of structural designs for commercial and residential multistory buildings including industrial structures and public infrastructures. He was President of Consulting Engineers Association of India during the period December 2003 to December 2005. Chandrakant and Patricia Desai Scholarship Dr. Chandrakant S. Desai is a Regents Professor at the University of Arizona, Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Tucson, AZ , USA. After his high school and college education in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, he received a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in 1959 in Civil Engineering from the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, University of Bombay. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ as a Professor and Director of Engineering Mechanics, Geomechanics and Structural Mechanics Program, and later as the Director of the Center of Material Modeling and Computational Mechanics. He served as the Head of the Department from 1987-1991. In 1989, he was awarded the Regents Professorship by The University of Arizona. Prof. KV Venkatesha Murthy Scholarship Prof. KV Venkatesha Murthy was one of the pioneer faculty members of IIT Gandhinagar, who joined the newly established institute on December 29, 2009, thus being a part of the IITGN community for more than seven years. He taught in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay for about 40 years as an exemplary teacher. After obtaining his B.E. (in Electrical Technology) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1963, he pursued his M.Tech and Ph.D from the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay. Known for his dignified unassuming personality and gleaming intellect, Prof. Murthy made an indelible mark as a teacher in the Institute. Dr. JL Nayyar Scholarship Mr. Mohinder L. Nayyar, P.E., a resident of Virginia, USA, is an internationally recognized specialist in the areas of piping, valves, materials and codes and standards and was honored by ASME for his contributions to Codes and Standards. Mr. Nayyar is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Melvin R. Green Medal, ASME Forever Medal for Excellence in piping, ASME Hall of Fame Medal, Master of Power Piping Award, and the ASME Dedicated Service Award. He is a recipient of 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Roorkee. He is the author and Editor-in-Chief of the Sixth and Seventh editions of the Piping Handbook and the Piping Databook, internationally used reference books, published by McGraw-Hill Company of New York. He has published articles in Valve Magazine; authored an article title Pipeline for the 7th edition of the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. He has instituted this scholarship in the honour of his brother Dr. JL Nayyar. Professor DV Pai Scholarship Prof. Devidas Venkatesh Pai was born in Goa, India in September 1941. He earned B.Sc. Hons (Mathematics) and M.Sc. (Mathematics) both in first class with distinction from Mumbai University. He joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics, IIT Bombay as Associate Lecturer in July 1967 and was promoted subsequently as a Lecturer in 1969. He completed his Ph.D. Degree from IIT Bombay in the area of Approximation Theory in 1972. He was promoted as Assistant Professor in 1973 and subsequently rose to the position of professor there (1983-2004) and was given the opportunity of working as Head of the Department during 1984-87 at IIT Bombay. Prof. Pai received the Excellence in Teaching Award given by IIT Bombay in 2000. He has also been conferred the title Professor Emeritus by IIT Bombay in 2008. The Indian Mathematical Society honoured him with the 11th Ganesh Prasad Memorial Award Lecture in its 79th Annual Conference at Rajagiri, Cochin in 2013. Subsequently, he was given the opportunity of working as President, Indian Mathematical Society during the year 2016-17. Prof. Pai has been associated with IIT Gandhinagar since July 2009. Santosh Rani Tandon Scholarship Prof. Mahesh Tandon is the Managing Director, Tandon Consultants Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi. He is an international expert in the field of Structural Engineering. Many of the structures designed by Prof. Tandon have been widely acclaimed and have received recognition in India as well as internationally. He is the President, Indian Association of Structural Engineers (2015-16) and President, Indian Society of Wind Engineering (2015-16). Under the AICTE- IANE program, he was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at IITs @ Kanpur, Roorkee & Gandhinagar (2005-2015). He is a fellow of INAE, the past Chairman of the National Information Center for Earthquake Engineering at IIT Kanpur and the past president of Indian Concrete Institute. His special areas of interest also include motivating the next generation to adopt Civil Engineering as their profession and vocation in life. Mrs. Sita Jha Memorial Scholarship Mr. Nirmal Jha is a 1977 B.Tech (Electrical Engineering) graduate from IIT Kanpur. He has more than 38 years of experience in multinational power industry across Asia, USA and China. He has also served on the board of several international companies. Post retirement from the industry, he is currently associated with IIT Gandhinagar as Advisor (Industry Partnerships). Bipin and Rekha Shah Scholarships Mr. Bipin Shah is CEO and Chairman of Kovair Software in San Ramon, California. He is an Electrical Engineering Graduate of Jadavpur University, Kolkata with a BEE (Hons) degree and holds a MSEE from the University of Wisconsin. His entrepreneurial activities have included several angel investments including mentoring and three start-ups with his direct involvement. He has been active in several non-profit organisations, including one of the founding Charter Members of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and Ahimsa Center at California Polytechnic University in Pomona, CA and the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of USA and being part of the Board of FFE – the Foundation for Excellence. Bipin Shah is a co-founder of the IIT Gandhinagar Foundation in USA as well. He and his wife Rekha make their home in Lafayette, CA and have three grown children. Bhai Suresh Mohan Mittal Scholarship and Bhai Krishna Chandra Mittal Scholarship Mr. Sudhir M Mittal is currently the Managing Director Sukriti (P) Ltd., Ghaziabad. He did his BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1970. He worked with Union Carbide for 10 years. He switched from job to his own enterprise and set up special wire manufacturing unit Sukriti Vidyut Udyog making silver and nickel plated copper wires. Presently, more than 60% of the produce is exported to Europe, USA and the Far East. He actively pursues village and primary education. He is also the President of Gram Bharati, near Pilakhua, a training school for teachers of village schools. He is actively associated with Saraswati Vidya Mandir Ghaziabad. He is on advisory committee of SIDBI Centre for Entrepreneurship Development at IIT Kanpur, and has frequently interacted with the IIT students as a mentor who want to start their own venture. Mr. Mittal has instituted these scholarships in memory of his brothers, Mr. Suresh Mohan Mittal and Mr. Krishna Chandra Mittal. Prof. S P Sukhatme Scholarship Prof. S P Sukhatme has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Bombay since 1965 and served as the Director of the Institute from 1995 to 2000. He is known for his outstanding contributions to teaching and research in the fields of Heat Transfer and Energy and is the author of two well-known books on Heat Transfer and Solar Energy. He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Govt. of India from 2000 to 2005. Prof Sukhatme is the recipient of many honours and awards and was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in 1983. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2001 and was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of IIT Bombay. Ajodyabai Gulabchandji Randad Scholarship Akshay Randad is a BTech alumnus of Class of 2015 with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Management. He has also done Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle. He works as a Transducer Engineer at Applied Physics Lab at University of Washington Seattle & will be joining as an R&D engineer with a medical device company Sonomotion Inc. in the Bay Area (US). He has instituted this scholarship in the memory of his late grandmother. Shri Arjun Raj Mehta Scholarship Rounak Mehta is a BTech Class of 2015 graduate with a major in Mechanical Engineering. He subsequently pursued Masters in Engineer Management from Duke University and currently works as a Data Scientist at Salesforce in San Francisco. Shri Arjunraj Manakraj Mehta scholarship is instituted by him in the memory of his grandfather; the scholarship amount is Rs. 1 lakh per year to support one undergraduate student at IITGN every year for international internships, projects, and other needs. His grandfather, Shri Arjunraj Manakraj Mehta, was a self-made businessman who believed in the power of education and was passionate about supporting those seeking to learn. The scholarship aims to spread his values and honour his legacy. Vimala Srinivas Scholarship Sai Chowdary Gullapally is a BTech alumnus of Class of 2016 with a major in Electrical Engineering. He has done his Masters in Intelligent Systems, Robotics and Controls from ECE Department of University of California San Diego. He currently works with an AI and Healthcare startup, PathAI in Boston as a Machine Learning Engineer. The Vimala Srinivas Scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar is set up by Sai Chowdary Gullapally in honor of his parents. The scholarship of Rs. 1 lakh per year is to support the undergraduate students for international internships, projects and other needs. This was the first-such scholarship at IITGN set up by a single alumnus. Vinay Kumar Gupta Scholarship Luv Gupta is a BTech Chemical Engineering pioneer batch alumnus of IIT Gandhinagar. He graduated from IITGN in the year 2012 and pursued his MS in Chemical Engineering at Stanford University USA. He worked as a summer research intern in SLAC National Acceleratory Laboratory (USA) and as Business Analytics Intern at Cooliris (Palo Alto, USA). Currently, he works as Data Scientist at Uber in San Francisco Bay Area, USA. Prior to this, he worked as Data Scientist at Verizon Digital Media Services, USA. He has instituted this scholarship in the honour of his father. Ashok Jain Scholarship Sarthak Jain is a B.Tech alumnus of the pioneer batch with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science and Engineering. He is the Co-Founder and CEO of NanoNets: Machine Learning API. “Ashok Jain Scholarship” is set up by Sarthak Jain, a pioneer batch alumnus, in the honor of his late father Mr Ashok Jain. The scholarship of Rs. 1 lakh per year supports the undergraduate students for funding their international internships, projects, and other needs.
